We have been leading a campaign against accent bias and linguistic discrimination at UoE since January 2022.
In that time, we have achieved the following:
- Delivered accent bias training to over 1000 members of staff, across 2 colleges.
- Accent bias and linguistic discrimination is now embedded in the EDI plan of CAHSS.
- Accent bias is now acknowledged as an access barrier in our Widening Participation strategy.
- The 93% Club’s State School Proud campaign has generated over 1 million views.
- A new society, SSMS, has formed to represent the voices of Scottish students.
- Two sell-out (capacity of 250 and 150) events on accent bias at an elite university.
- Over 60 news media articles on the topic/our activities.
- Two co-authored journal articles in high impact journals (Journal of Applied Linguistics, British Journal Sociology of Education), and a forthcoming book on Linguistic Discrimination in Higher Education (Clements and Petray)
- A new Pre-Hons course in Language and Social Justice at the University of Edinburgh
